I don’t want to sound self-promotional.

There’s one sentence I hear on discovery calls more than almost any other.

“I want to be more visible… I just don’t want to sound self-promotional.”

If you’ve ever thought that, you’re in good company! Honestly, the people who say it are usually the ones with the most to offer.

They’re leading teams, building companies, speaking at conferences, mentoring people, solving hard problems. But ask them to talk about themselves? They freeze.

Some worry they’ll come off as arrogant. Others just don’t know where to start. And a lot of them tell me the same thing: “My work speaks for itself.”

I get it. For years, we were taught that good work gets noticed on its own. And sometimes it does. But good work nobody sees? That gets overlooked.

So this week I told a client something that shifted how they saw the whole thing:

The moment your story becomes useful to someone else, it stops being self-promotion and starts being leadership.

Think about the leaders you actually admire. You don’t respect them because they remind you how successful they are. You respect them because they share what they’ve learned, and it helps you get better, or get where you’re trying to go.

That’s what thought leadership really is. Not posting for attention. Not building a personal brand just to have one. Just taking what you know and sharing it so it helps someone else.

That’s leadership.
