20 free tools to audit your first impression

BEHIND THE CERTAIN

Before they meet you, they search you.

And it’s not just people doing the looking anymore.

If you watched webinar replay from earlier this month, you already know the shift: your reputation is being shaped by three evaluators before you ever say a word: people, search engines, and AI. Decision-makers research you. Google decides what they find. And ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude pattern-match a summary of you from whatever’s public.

You can’t control that first impression. But you can shape it.

I promised you the full free tool stack to audit and build your footprint — so here it is, organized exactly the way I walked through it. Bookmark this email.

The Free Resource Stack

AUDIT — See what’s actually showing up

Before you change anything, find out what people and AI currently see.

  • Google Incognito — Search your full name. What returns on page 1? What’s missing?
  • ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude — Ask each one: “Who is [your name]?” Compare the answers.
  • LinkedIn Search Appearances — In your dashboard: what terms surfaced you last week?
  • Page-1 audit — Note what you own (your site, profiles) vs. what you don’t.

SIGNALS — Build third-party authority

Press features, contributed articles, and podcast appearances are the signals AI weighs most heavily.

  • Connectively — connectively.us — quote-sourcing platform (formerly HARO + Featured).
  • Source of Sources — sourceofsources.com — relaunched by HARO’s original founder, Peter Shankman.
  • Qwoted — qwoted.com — expert-to-journalist matching, free tier.
  • Help a B2B Writer — helpab2bwriter.com — targeted B2B journalist requests.

DISCOVERY — Optimize for the questions people actually ask

Build content around real search questions — humans and AI both reward it.

  • Answer the Public — answerthepublic.com — visualizes real search questions around any keyword.
  • AlsoAsked — alsoasked.com — maps Google’s “People Also Ask” follow-ups.
  • Google Trends — trends.google.com — what’s surging now in your industry.
  • Keyword Surfer — free Chrome extension — search volume and related terms inline.

TRACK — Set it up once, review monthly

What gets measured gets refined.

  • Google Alerts — google.com/alerts — name, brand, and topic mentions to your inbox.
  • Talkwalker Alerts — free alternative with broader web coverage.
  • Mention.com — free tier to monitor brand and competitor mentions.
  • Monthly AI self-search — re-run those “Who is [your name]?” queries and log what changed.

Your 10-minute homework: The Visibility Gap Audit

Run these four checks on yourself this week:

  1. What does your LinkedIn headline say in five seconds — and is it the right thing?
  2. What appears on page one of Google for your full name?
  3. What does ChatGPT say when asked, “Who is [your name]?”
  4. What third-party signals — press, podcasts, citations — can a stranger actually find?

Every signal you add today compounds tomorrow.

Now…let’s do this in person!

I’m hosting a fireside chat and I’d love to have you there.

The Moment I Realized I Was Invisible
A candid conversation with my friend, lawyer, and client, Michelle Bufano, about visibility, reputation, and what it really takes to be found.

In this fireside, you’ll walk away with:

  • The real cost of the gap between your internal narrative and your external footprint
  • How Theatre of the Mind — the framework behind my book — explains why high performers hesitate to show up, and how to reverse it
  • A starting point and roadmap to take ownership of your visibility — not someday, now

I hope to see you there!
