Approval Is Not a Strategy

The “I’ll start when…” story is costing you more than you think.

BEHIND THE CURTAIN

If you’ve ever softened your message to keep the room comfortable, this is for you.

BTW, Thank you SO MUCH for all of your support during my book launch of Theatre of the Mind!

We made it to both PR and Digital Marketing best seller lists on Amazon multiple times!!

There’s a quiet narrative that runs in the minds of many founders and executives: “I need to wait.”

“I need to wait until the product launches.”
“I need to wait until I hire the right team.”
“I need to wait until I have more time.”
“I need to wait until the board weighs in.”
“I need to wait until it’s perfect.”

It sounds strategic. It sounds responsible. But most of the time, it’s not about readiness. It’s about approval.

Approval from the board.
Approval from your team.
Approval from the market.
Approval from the invisible audience in your head.

In Theatre of the Mind, I explore the internal narratives that quietly govern how leaders show up. One of the most powerful is this: “When everything is aligned, then I’ll show up.”

But that alignment rarely arrives. And waiting becomes a leadership pattern. Approval is not a strategy. And delay is often approval-seeking in disguise.

If waiting is the polished version of fear, we need to name what’s really happening.

Here are three patterns I see over and over again.

1

Waiting feels productive. It is often protective. Protective of yourself. “I’ll start when…” creates the illusion of progress. But it protects you from exposure. From judgment. From being seen mid-build.

2

There is no clean launch moment. Your team won’t be fully built. The product won’t be fully polished. Your calendar won’t suddenly clear. Leadership is built in motion, not in stillness. Definitely not in waiting.

3

I say this to all of my clients. The market builds trust in real time. You will see what the market tells you. People don’t trust perfection. They trust people who consistently share their voice. They trust leaders who communicate while building — not after everything is finished. Share your knowledge. The world needs it!

If you wait until you’re fully formed, the narrative about you will already be written by someone else.

“Waiting is rarely about readiness. It’s about protecting the version of yourself that hasn’t been tested yet.”

Ask Yourself This:

What are you telling yourself you need before you can start?

More time?
More validation?
More certainty?

Or is it simply permission?

The story of “I’ll start when…” is rarely about timing. It’s about comfort. Learn more about getting started on launching your personal brand with my book, Theatre of the Mind.

You will never level up being comfortable. The leaders who move first shape the market before the market shapes them…

Until next time,
